Toshiba’s Candy bar Portege G450 goes Handy!

October 15th, 2008

With a shape of a candy bar having three circles — -one for the screen and two for the keypads, Toshiba launches the new Toshiba Portege G450 model as a mobile, modem, and mp3 player as of May this year.

The Portege G450 rarely looks like a phone when you first look at it as the screen is not even colored with its monochrome graphics. This new mobile phone from Toshiba doesn’t much do some fancy graphical stuff but it is designed mainly for modem use having a 3G/ HSDPA speed. The weird look of the phone will have us mistaking it to a simple mp3 player that has a 160mb internal memory but believe it or not, it serves as a mobile phone also! It allows you to have a talk time of 180 to 200 hours of work time or at leaset 2-3 hours of standby time. Although this phone looks sexy, some of the features of the new-edge phone nowadays doesn’t much do some of the file sharing process like having a Bluetooth (although it can transfer files via USB) or having an expandable memory card. And if you like doing camera trips like taking stolen shots, those moments won’t be captured by this phone as it doesn’t have a camera.

The simple features of the phone are amazing for your simple and busy lifestyle. You can use it when you like going to the gym, having business calls on rush hour traffics or even when you just have a lot to do as it is small, light with the weight of 56 grams and can go with your mood as it goes in colors of red, white, and the classic—black.

Nokia is Becoming Ubiquitous, Literally

October 14th, 2008

Nokia’s Wireless Systems and Services division has been developing an innovative and the first of its kind technology for indoor Global Positioning System. Unlike regular or outdoor GPS, which utilizes the “eye-in-the-sky” approach with the help of space-based satellites, Nokia’s indoor GPS will be integrated on your Nokia cellular phone and use Wi-Fi technology in order to triangulate your area.

Consider this a high-tech, micro-perspective way of mapping things out.

Satellite influenced GPS signals can’t really get through the thick concrete of buildings, but many of today’s buildings have a Wi-Fi connection running. This Wi-Fi connection will help Nokia’s system to identify a relatively accurate, fixed indoor position via proximity and triangulation calculations, which is based on the building’s blueprint map, registered in the system beforehand.

Over 40 of its offices , all over the world have already been mapped out by Nokia.

Nokia’s integrated system is highly anticipated and regarded as futuristic—indoor GPS can help individuals pinpoint their exact location in an indoor space, find their way through a new office building, and locate areas of interest i.e. coffee shop or the essential comfort room. Not to mention that with the indoor GPS service, individuals can also browse through the building’s directory without having to crowd on the building’s huge directory board displayed by its lobby.

Other than just offering the indoor GPS service, Nokia sees this technology as yet another means to generate additional revenue via mobile advertisements while using the service.

In case you’re interested, this application is available for consumer beta-testing later this year in the Nokia Labs website.

While I find the developments in technology quite astounding and fascinating, I am not too keen in having my entire whereabouts—indoors and outdoors—dependent on systems. I think I make myself very vulnerable in doing so.

Technology is a clear exchange of information; in this case if I use this technology, it’s like me telling the system: “this is where I am,” and the system will tell me: “You are exactly at Block A in Building B.” –and that’s scary, to have your every bit tracked down.

What’s so wrong with asking for directions in the first place? Or discovering a new place with the help of the good old map or building directory even? I totally get the point that GPS helps out adventurers; them amazing people who climb Mt. Everest or go fishing somewhere in the Pacific but is it really that practical for us, regular city-dwellers?

If we totally allow ourselves to be dependent on technology for every little thing, then might as well be without arms, legs, or a brain. – That’s just in my opinion.

Nokia Aeon Concept Phone

October 14th, 2008

Looking for a smooth, thin and sleek designed phone? Nokia has probably got your answer as it says on the rumors that next February, this baby phone called Nokia Aeon will be out in the market. It is super sci-fi looking and you won’t believe that it is even a touch screen covering the whole body of the phone although a stylus is yet to be found on this phone for the meantime.

As the phone will be in the market next year, come on people, let us expect that Motorola will have the same concept phone being planned as of this right very moment and oh yeh, the cool thing about the Aeon as well is that it will have a wi-fi feature enabled as well. Pretty funny and pretty cool new stuff from nokia, right? I mean look at those fat phones they have been creating for years — they even set the trend for “the bigger phone, the cooler on” but now, things will change with the Aeon as it will be super slim and that is soon to be anticipated.

Touching the Next Generation On Apple iPod Enhanced Features

October 7th, 2008

Apple is bragging new iPod nano and iPod touch models. But are the new features sufficient to sell the next generation of Apple’s market-leading MP3 players?

Apple initiated the iPod craze by introducing the fourth-generation iPod nano last month. It’s the thinnest iPod ever with a design that focuses on a curved aluminum and glass enclosure. The new nano comes in nine colors and incorporates Apple’s Genius technology, a one-click feature that automatically produces playlists from songs in a user’s music library that complement each other.

The new iPod nano also features an enhanced user interface. The new iPod nano grants users up to 24 hours of music playback or four hours of video playback between charges and is available worldwide in an 8GB model for $149 and a 16GB model for $199. iTunes 8 is causing Blues Screens of Death (BSOD) on Vista

October 7th, 2008

In the Apple corroborate forum, users are complaining that iTunes 8 is causing (BSOD) when an iPod or iPhone is connected. Users are trying to sort it out, and Apple has provided some minimal guidance.

Apple’s intention iis not to switch Vista users to Macintosh by writing insufficiently tested software. The incident is both a reminder of how difficult it is to write great software for Windows.

The problem appears to be related to the Windows architecture. While a poorly written app can crash itself, it shouldn’t be able to crash the whole system

The desire of Windows users to have iTunes 8 is, in some cases, casting the blame on Microsoft Relevant Products/Services rather than Apple. Apple could even obtain some benefit, because if iTunes 8 crashes Vista and not Mac OS X, there must be something really wrong with Vista.

Netflix partnered with Starz To Advance Online Strategy

October 7th, 2008

Netflix has inked an concord with Starz Entertainment under which Netflix subscribers will gain unlimited access to 2,500 additional movies and other choices from the Starz Play broadband subscription-movie service.

Netflix envisions that worldwide subscriptions to the (IPTV) services they offered and its many competitors will rise by 64.1 percent year-over-year to reach 19.6 million customers in 2008. On the downside, however, Netflix and its rivals will face an progressively aggressive video-streaming landscape going forward.

Netflix is well posed to contend because the company is concentrated on movies. Amazon has done some interesting things, but no one else can rival Netflix’s unlimited streaming plans, which begin at $16.99 per month. Netflix has already made several hardware moves this year thatposition the company to compete with rivals such as Apple and Amazon.

Netflix launched a $99 set-top box last May that connects the company’s online service to regular TV sets.
